Performing Arts

Emmaus College is proud of its Performing Arts achievements. With core and elective curriculum across the Year 7 – 12 spectrum, students gain the experience and skills needed in the wider community. Subjects currently offered include dance, drama, theatre arts and theatre studies from Year 7 to the VCE years and VET Live Production in the VCAL strand. These subjects offer public performances at our well-resourced Y9@E Campus Hall, and at our recently completed award winning Bill Holligan Performing Arts Centre at the Vermont South Campus. Students are also given ample opportunity to perform to audiences through participation in theatre sports, lunchtime and after school drama workshops, music ensembles and our popular annual Charity Concert. We are also in a fortunate position to offer all our students the opportunity to become involved in our Annual College Production, which is always a high-caliber, polished and professional production.

2016 Production - Hairspray

Hairspray is a musical based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and meets a colorful array of characters. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.

2016 Production - Beauty and the Beast

Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice’s daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle's taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation back into a handsome prince is a "tale as old as time".

2014 Production - Anything Goes

Anything Goes is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and was performed with great skill by the Emmaus team in July 2014. The story concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London and featured characters such as Billy Crocker, Hope Harcourt, Lord Evelyn, Reno Sweeney and Moonface Martin. The College Production introduced songs such as "Anything Goes", "You're the Top", and "I Get a Kick Out of You" to a new generation.
