About the School and Location
Loburg 14, 48346 Ostbevern 6, Germany
In 2002, Emmaus College established a sister school relationship with the German boarding school Gymnasium Johanneum. Gymnasium Johanneum, with a moated castle as its vital centre, is situated in the north-west of Germany near the historic town of Münster, the cultural centre of the Westphalia region. Within two hours, one can visit the famous dome in Cologne, the luxurious canal houses and charming gabled facades in Amsterdam, the flair and maritime charm of Hamburg’s seaport, or the Königsallee in Düsseldorf for a unique shopping experience.
About the Exchange Program
From the start, the program was based on the concept of reciprocal exchange. Each year, students from Germany come to Australia at the end of Term 3 (July – September) and are hosted by an Australian student for 8 weeks. Australian students then go to Germany in the summer holidays (December – January) and are hosted by the family of their exchange partner.
The relationship between Emmaus College and the Gymnasium Johanneum is designed to foster, maintain and promote mutual understanding and appreciation, and to promote positive relations between students from Australia and Germany. The program also seeks to deepen the understanding of, and respect for, each other’s cultures, to give students the opportunity to practise and improve their oral language skills, and to help them develop global perspectives and a global mindset. Over the past 10 years, the Emmaus College Exchange Program with its German Sister School has been a very successful, rewarding, and life-changing experience for many students from both schools
